What is Coaching?

By following the Coaching tenet of People-Based Patient Safety®, employees learn how to increase interdependent problem-solving by monitoring their co-workers activities and by providing helpful feedback that supports safe behavior.

C-O-A-C-H is a method Dr. Geller recommends to enhance the coaching process:

  • Care — Employees must actively care about the people they work with,
because they depend on each other to provide quality healthcare.

  • Observe — They must observe the actions of their co-workers to notice
    errors when they occur.

  • Analyze — They should analyze the actions to determine how they could
be done differently to avoid errors.

  • Communicate — The most important step is to communicate with
co-workers to discuss concerns and help them avoid mistakes.

  • Help — Finally, they should always be ready to help their coworkers to
    ensure patients get quality care.

These five steps help build a Total Safety Culture, in which caregivers trust each other and communicate openly about possible errors and close calls.
